Located in the valley of Nam Ko and surrounded by magnificent moutains, Oudomxay city (or Oudomxai, Muang Xai, Udomxai) is the capital of Oudomxai and also the major commercial crossroads between Laos and China. It connects Luang Prabang and Luang Nam Tha and therefore, it becomes a frequent stopover point of travelers, despite the lack of real tourist attractions.
Much of the city was destroyed by bombing during war time; hence, the village could not keep historic districts anymore. The large market, craft workshop and Wat Phouhat temples are must see destinations of the area.
Oudomxay is inhabited by the Lao Soung, Lao Theung, Lao Loum and Chinese.
